Massage as we know it today was developed by Per Henrik Ling at the beginning of the 19th Century. It is a combination of his knowledge of gymnastics and physiology along with Chinese, Egyptian, Roman and Greek techniques and is known as Swedish massage.
Swedish massage is a manipulation of the soft tissue of the body for theraputic purposes. This massage uses flowing movements, a deeper pressure and brisk, vigorous movements.
